The vines, with an average age of 30 years, are grown in top class Rioja Alta vineyards with soils composed of clay and limestone. The grapes are picked between mid-September and the end of October. The juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks with the temperature controlled at 26 ̊c. When fermentation is complete, the wine is racked into barrels for 8 months. Selection of barrels is of particular importance in Rioja where oak is such a critical element in winemaking. For Gran Familia we chose to put 50% of the wine into American oak barrels and 50% into French oak barrels. This results in the perfect balance of fruit and oak.

J. LASSALLE

J. LASSALLE

Champagne, France

Jules Lassalle established this family-owned Champagne house in 1942 in the village of Chigny-Les-Roses on the Montagne de Reims. A master of his craft, he established a signature style of elegant, tightly knit wines with a certain ampleur. When he passed away in 1982 his wife, Olga, and their daughter, Chantal Decelle-Lassalle, stepped in and took over the estate, upholding Jules’ high standards and progressively pushing the domaine to the next level. In 2006 Chantal’s daughter, Angéline Templier, joined the estate as winemaker. Their twenty-eight-year tradition of “une femme, un esprit, un style” (one woman, one spirit, one style) holds true today more than ever. In the 1970s, Kermit was the first to begin importing artisanal, grower Champagne, and the Lassalles have been in the KLWM portfolio longer than anyone. Today, we are proud that the relationship has continued into the third generation of the Lassalle family.

JOH JOS PRUM ESTATE

JOH JOS PRUM ESTATE

Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany

Since 1156 the Prüms have called the village of Wehlen home. The Prüm estate as we know it today began with Sebastian Alois Prüm (1794-1871); his brother Jodocus constructed the Wehlener and Zeltinger sundials. Of his six sons only Mathias (1835-1890) married. In 1911 the estate was split amongst Mathias’s four sons and three daughters. It was when his oldest son, Joh. Jos. Prüm, started the estate. Joh. Jos. Prüm was in poor health when his son Sebastian took over in 1920 and went on to establish the world repute of the estate which continues to this day. After his death in 1969, his son Dr. Manfred Prüm assumed the responsibility and today Manfred and his oldest daughter, Katharina work in parallel to manage the estate. It’s most important vineyard holdings are the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and Bernkasteler Badstube. The vineyards are planted 100% Riesling. The Joh. Jos. Prüm estate ferments its Riesling almost exclusively with indigenous yeast. Annual production is 15,000 cases.

LA QUERCIA

LA QUERCIA

Abruzzo, Italy

One of La Quercia’s most remarkable qualities is their consistency. Regardless of what may be happening elsewhere in Italy, Antonio’s estate remains steadfast in terms of both style and quality from one vintage to the next. This, in part, is thanks to their unique location. The town of Morro d’Oro, in the small, coastal province of Teramo, is protected on one side by the Adriatic Sea (constant breezes ensure they have virtually no mold or pest issues), and on its flank by the Apennine Mountains. These natural barriers form a beautiful “pocket” with 300 days of sun per year and comparatively few climate variations. In addition, the Colli Apruntini IGP is actually analogous with the Colline Teramane (‘Hills of Teramo’) DOCG, meaning that La Quercia’s everyday vines are grown alongside some of the very best in Abruzzo.
